Description

This Czech-language medical biology textbook provides a comprehensive view of the subject as a foundation of modern medical education. Across thirty chapters, it systematically covers all key areas, from the chemical foundations of life and the structure and function of proteins to genome organization, DNA replication, transcription, translation and the regulation of gene expression, as well as cellular processes including division, signaling, differentiation and programmed cell death. Important chapters address the human genome, genomic instability, and DNA damage and repair. A substantial section focuses on genetics, including Mendelian and multifactorial inheritance, gene linkage, population genetics, epigenetics and immunogenetics. The book also introduces cellular and molecular biology techniques and clinically relevant topics such as cancer biology, gene therapy, the human microbiome, stem cells and tissue engineering. The final part offers an introduction to human ontogeny and the basic principles of evolutionary biology. Each chapter connects theoretical foundations with practical and clinical contexts, supported by diagrams, illustrations, case studies and clinical notes. The textbook is intended primarily for undergraduate students of general and dental medicine, but it can also be useful in postgraduate education and for doctors in various specialties. It is co-published with the Faculty of Medicine at Masaryk University in Brno.
