The clinical field of cardio-oncology focuses on lifelong care for patients after oncological and hematological treatment with cardiovascular complications, thus combining the work of oncologists or hematologists, cardiologists, angiologists, internists, and general practitioners. The field also cares for patients with primary heart tumors.

In the early 1970s, the first information emerged about the fatal cardiotoxic effects of chemotherapy containing anthracycline derivatives. Over the next ten years, large randomized studies were published that evaluated the cardiotoxicity of these drugs as acute, subacute, chronic, and late severe complications of otherwise very effective anti-cancer therapy, especially in hematology. Currently, there seems to be no oncological treatment regimen that does not lead to some form of cardiovascular damage. Since 1990, there has been a sharp decline in oncological mortality with an increase in survivors after therapy, but at the same time, there is a risk of developing cardiovascular toxicity.
