Description
What comes to mind first when you hear the word 'fortress'? Is it a fortified camp of Roman legions, the tall and sturdy walls of a medieval castle, a baroque fortress with bastions and ravelins, or concrete bunkers of border fortifications? The history of fortifications and siege warfare is an inseparable part of the history of warfare, which in turn represents a significant part of human history: and like every specialized field, it has its own terminology. In the case of fortifications, these are terms that have evolved over centuries and have been influenced by various factors. Perhaps they are not as easily understood today, even though the structures they describe are all around us. So what exactly is machicolation, arsenal, caponiere, ravelin, or frieze horse? How do you recognize a curtain wall, donjon, or flak tower? The lexicon of fortification terms is supplemented with illustrative drawings and an introductory summarizing study. Additionally, the Czech edition includes an original section dedicated to the history of fortification and siege in our territory.
