Description
The locomotive class 556.0 represented one of the most powerful, reliable, and widely used locomotive classes in our locomotive economy. The production utilized many years of experience in the construction of steam locomotives, dating back to 1919, when the first steam locomotive of class 556.0 was produced. It did not boast any cutting-edge technical features, but was unique in its balance of proven and operationally satisfactory elements. With its operational performance, great adaptability, and construction simplicity, it was so successful that a total of 510 units were produced over seven years. Without any major design changes, it became the most numerous class of steam locomotives at ČSD. The designers of this successful locomotive class drew from the proven elements of class 555.0, from which the drive was adopted. They took the locomotive boiler from class 475.1, with some minor details altered. The reason for the development of class 556.0 was the ever-increasing demands for transportation after World War II, for train operations where the performance of class 534.0 was no longer sufficient.
