Description
In the new millennium, the direction of thinking about autism is changing; there is open discussion about the possibility of 'recovery' in the case of early intervention. The Czech Republic has reached a world level in the detection of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) in early childhood by adopting a universal early detection questionnaire, M-CHAT-R.
The book addresses the issue of autism with the openness needed to change the perception of individuals with ASD. It expands the view of the disorder, which has been seen for many years only through the lens of behavioral syndrome and where behavioral approaches have been prioritized, to include other aspects. It presents the developmental model of parental intervention O.T.A.®, which can, with early indication in toddler age, mean an effective way to reduce the impacts on the child, their family, and also reduce the costs of subsequent care. This responds to the globally declared challenges in the field of interventions for children with ASD (National Research Council, 2001).
The first part of the book introduces readers to new scientific findings from child psychiatry, neurology, genetics, clinical speech therapy, and psychology. ASD is placed in the context of neurodevelopmental disorders, which often overlap and influence the differential diagnostic process.
