Description
The name Petr Parléř is in the general consciousness inextricably linked to the personality of Charles IV and the St. Vitus Cathedral. Less known is that this builder, stonemason, sculptor, and carver was an exceptional figure among architects of Central European Gothic, a genius and bold innovator. His work paved the way for the next, peak stage of Central European Gothic architecture, sometimes even referred to as Parléř Gothic. He was born in 1332 or 1333 in Gmünd or Cologne. His father, Heinrich Parler, a builder from a large and famous German building family, was active in these places at that time. The Czech king and Roman emperor Charles IV appointed Petr Parléř as the head of the construction workshop when he was just twenty-three years old. Under his leadership, the workshop built the Charles Bridge with the Old Town Bridge Tower, the choir of St. Bartolomew's Church in Cologne, parts of the Old Town Church of Our Lady before Týn, and more.
