The production of electric locomotives has a century-long tradition at the Škoda factory in Plzeň. In the 1920s, the first electric locomotives operating at 1,500 V were produced, and in the 1960s, the development and production of single-phase electric locomotives for 25 kV and 50 Hz began for domestic customers and for export. The publication first describes the emergence and development of alternating current traction and primarily focuses on individual locomotive series, including their operational deployment. It also does not forget the establishment of the subsidiary companies ČD Cargo and Cargo Slovakia, presents readers with further electrification plans, and maps some accidents involving alternating current electric locomotives that influenced their discontinuation. It is supplemented with a complete list of single-phase electric locomotives with necessary data, sketches of all series, and predominantly color photographs, including images of locomotives operated by private carriers. The book is currently the only one that provides a comprehensive overview of single-phase electric locomotives operating on the tracks in the Czech and Slovak Republics.
