Insects, with approximately one million species, are the most diverse group of animals on Earth. What characterizes insects? Insects have a hard outer shell made of chitin, which serves somewhat like armor for knights. Their bodies consist of three parts: the head, thorax, and abdomen. Using a color code, insects have been divided into seven groups, making it easier to identify individual species. Each color is assigned to a group of insects that have a similar body structure. However, the number and shape of wings also play an important role here. Grouping is not subject to strict zoological systematics but should allow for the simplest and most accurate identification.
