This lavish illustrated publication significantly differs from typical publications dedicated to the history of the greatest conflict of the 20th century. It is essentially a photo album with minimal text but with more than two hundred surprising photographs of decaying weapons and equipment left behind by the warring parties on practically all continents, except perhaps Antarctica. After a brief introduction, five chapters follow, featuring photographs from all battlefields of World War II, from Western and Eastern Europe through the Mediterranean, the Middle East, and North Africa to Asia and the Pacific. In all these places, a large number of weapons, ammunition, aircraft, armored vehicles, and fortifications of the war arsenal have been preserved, the unprecedented enormity of which the photographs inadvertently document. There is also a chapter on both American continents, where no direct fighting occurred, but where coastal fortifications still stand and where one can find wrecks of aircraft that crashed during training flights or while returning from anti-submarine patrols.
