Description
Grace Bennett arrives in London in August 1939, dreaming of a new beginning. However, she ends up as an assistant in a small dusty bookstore. And that's a problem – she understands the business, but she has never had time to read. Then a kind young man introduces her to The Count of Monte Cristo, and it becomes love at first sight. Grace completely falls in love with books and stories that take her away from the increasingly dire situation. Men are going off to war, and many will not return; children are being evacuated to the countryside, and destruction is falling from the sky, robbing residents of their homes, livelihoods, and loved ones. And when one day a frightened neighbor in the shelter asks Grace to read aloud, it turns into regular gatherings with stories that continue in the bookstore. The listeners become friends, united not only by the comfort found in the power of words but also by their willingness to lend a helping hand and not let each other fall.
