Architect Jan Blažej Santini-Aichel is a phenomenon. In the history of our architecture, there is no one else who has managed to realize his personal vision in such a grand manner within the environment of a generally respected style of governance. On the other hand, it would be a misunderstanding of the time and the work to interpret Santini as a solitary individual emerging from the context of Baroque and transcending all boundaries. The most remarkable thing about Santini is precisely that he managed to combine both of these seemingly opposing aspects. Even today, this extraordinary architect does not have a place in the general cultural consciousness that corresponds to his significance. And that is also the reason why this book was created and why Santini was chosen as the subject of the first volume of the planned editorial series dedicated to significant figures in our architectural history.
