Description
In the spring of 1998, Vietnamese Zen master and peace activist Thich Nhat Hanh led a twenty-one-day retreat on mindful breathing in Burlington, Vermont. The daily program, which consisted of seated and walking meditations, silent meals, discussions, and talks by Thich Nhat Hanh, was attended by four hundred people from around the world, some of whom were already quite knowledgeable about Buddhist teachings and practices; for many, however, it was their very first Buddhist retreat. Through the shared practice of mindfulness and listening to Thich Nhat Hanh's lectures, these individuals were transported from their everyday lives to a place of deep tranquility and discovered much about life. This book intentionally preserves the tone and style of the meditation retreat, including the sounds of bells, meditation breaks, and question-and-answer sessions. The atmosphere of the retreat is thus conveyed to readers who cannot participate in such a lengthy group sitting. The book is also a beloved companion for various transformational, relaxing, and meditative retreats.
