Description
Cell death represents one of the key physiological processes. Although it signifies the endpoint of existence for an individual cell, from the perspective of a multicellular organism, the process of cell death is one of the determinants that ensure proper individual development, tissue and organ homeostasis, and the survival of the entire organism. The importance of cell death is also reflected in the number of diseases caused by the disruption of its regulation, whether it concerns the queen of diseases – cancer, neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease, autoimmune and cardiovascular diseases, or traumatic brain injury. This book aims to illuminate the significance of cell death as a phenomenon that must not be overlooked in disease research. The reader will be introduced to the main subprograms of regulated cell death and the mechanisms that help the cell cope with the disruption of homeostasis. Adaptive responses that eliminate damage to macromolecules and associated diseases are described in detail. A separate chapter discusses the process of autophagy. This is followed by chapters dedicated to individual types of autonomous regulated cell death and a chapter on non-autonomous cell death, which arises from interactions between cells. The role of cell death in...
