Highly specialized perioperative care is provided based on a whole range of standards and recommendations that stem from scientific knowledge based on empirical evidence. Neither the lay public nor professionals generally assume that educated healthcare professionals would significantly violate these procedures. If complications arise during a surgical procedure, it is presumed to be the result of the necessary risks that come with surgery. The following publication presents a wealth of information that contradicts this assumption. The author formulates the concept of safety in general and patient safety in surgery. From personal experience, she describes the situation in the Czech Republic and compares it with perioperative care in Sweden, where she interned in 2013. A significant part of the text emphasizes the ethical aspect of perioperative care. It mentions the four principles of medical ethics by Beauchamp and Childress, the ethical codes of doctors and nurses, the AORN ethical code, and the Council of Europe's Convention on Biomedicine.
