Description

In 1940, units commanded by General Erich von Manstein, an advocate of incorporating armoured elements into infantry formations, received 30 Sturmgeschütz vehicles, giving rise to a new military force, the Sturmartillerie. The Sturmgeschütz assault gun was originally intended as an infantry support weapon for destroying machine-gun nests and, to a limited extent, engaging tanks. After proving its value with the Sturmartillerie, the StuG was deployed by various other units, including the Waffen-SS, Panzerjäger and Luftwaffe field units, as well as infantry divisions. On the Eastern Front, the Sturmgeschütz was capable of defeating even the excellent T-34 medium tanks and KV heavy tanks. As usual in Anderson’s work, the text is enlivened by numerous quotations from battle reports, assessments, tables and statistics. All the published material is based on wartime documentation, much of it held in the archives of NARA and the Bundesarchiv/Militärarchiv. Period photographs are particularly valuable to readers. The contents are in Czech.
