Description
The second edition, but it is actually a completely new publication, both in terms of concept and scope and content. The monograph summarizes morphological findings, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and interventional and surgical treatment of all major congenital heart defects (CHD) in adulthood. It addresses residual findings after childhood surgery as well as indications for surgeries or reoperations of CHD in adulthood. The text is in accordance with existing guidelines but also draws on the authors' own experiences from over 1000 surgeries on adults with CHD. The monograph includes images from examinations of adult patients with CHD, primarily using echocardiography, but also CT angiography, magnetic resonance imaging, and angiography. The general section discusses issues related to pregnancy in women with CHD, genetic aspects, prognosis, mortality, and heart failure in CHD, as well as the history of surgical and catheter-based treatment of CHD. There is also a perspective from an anesthesiologist on CHD and principles of rehabilitation for CHD. In addition to the main author, who has dedicated her life to this issue and is a co-author of several guidelines related to the diagnostic-therapeutic approach for these patients, the monograph has contributions from a team of cardiac surgeons, interventional cardiologists, arrhythmologists, and other specialists.
