The effort to treat diseases and correct defects or disorders is as old as illness and disability itself. However, even where treatment is not possible, it is still possible to strive for quality upbringing, education, personal development, and successful integration of disabled individuals into society. The relatively young field of special education was gradually born from the search for optimal approaches that are now being used. This successful and sought-after publication in its second, updated edition provides a basic overview of the field. We are increasingly encountering disabled individuals even in regular social environments—not just randomly at the doctor’s office, on the street, or in the cinema, but also in schools or workplaces. At the same time, we are witnessing significant changes in society in terms of social, economic, ethnic, and cultural diversification, which is not only related to waves of migration and other external influences but also to internal societal processes and trends. The process of lifelong learning and continuous personal development applies to disabled individuals just as it does to everyone else. Thanks to special education, these individuals can be raised, educated, and developed so that despite various disadvantages, they are able to live a quality and meaningful life.
