This Czech-language book by parenting and neuroscience expert Robyn Gobbel explains that even the most confusing and unpredictable behaviour can be understood and guided. By considering what happened beforehand and what is taking place within the child, parents and educators can better understand what the child is trying to communicate. Drawing on current neuroscience findings, the author emphasises the need to preserve safety for everyone, including the child and those around them. Unpredictable and difficult-to-understand behaviour can be dangerous: children may hurt themselves or put themselves in risky situations, which are still often addressed through medication and restrictive measures. The book considers how necessary such restrictions are and what can be done to ensure they are used only in truly exceptional circumstances. This issue often affects children with profound autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disability or metabolic disorders, as well as children with developmental behaviour disorders. Although the book addresses a serious problem, it also offers perspective and a degree of humour, encouraging a positive view of the child as a whole person rather than merely a collection of challenging symptoms.
