Description

On what basis is a person mentally healthy? This is the question Erich Fromm poses in his lectures from 1953 to 1974. What is accepted in society as normal may, according to the author, actually be pathological. As a result, an individual characterized by socially accepted pathology is perceived as an adapted member of society, while someone who is truly mentally healthy may suffer exclusion to the extent that mental illness manifests. Thus, in a sick society, which is primarily driven by economic demands today, Fromm argues that the healthy and adapted character is authoritarian, marketing-oriented, or necrophilic. Fromm's stay in Mexico contributed to these reflections, allowing him the necessary distance from the industrial society of contemporary United States. In Mexico, he encountered people who allow themselves to be 'lazy' and prefer leisure time over earning money. Fromm also shows that both lazy and active individuals are driven by their internal causes, and thus do not need to be forced into activity.
