Traditional approaches in marriage counseling provide advice, give instructions, and teach couples the correct forms of behavior. In contrast, the psychoanalytic approach in couples therapy respects the lifestyle of each couple, the attitudes and values of each partner. It seeks to help clients find common ground and enable them to realize themselves in the relationship, enjoy it more, and gain more support from it. It works with feelings, desires, and fantasies (often unconscious) that clients bring into the relationship. The theoretical part of the book offers an overview of the main elements of both classical and modern psychoanalytic theory that are applied in couples therapy. The most important concepts and theories are clarified with examples from psychoanalytic practice. In the practical section, the author formulates his approach to understanding and therapy of couple conflicts and clarifies his own theory of unconscious beliefs. He addresses the techniques of couples therapy, its basic principles, conducting initial interviews, therapy techniques, working with loss and grief in therapy, and concluding the therapeutic process. Compared to the first edition from 2014, the book has been updated and supplemented with new insights.
