Oliver Sacks is perhaps the most famous neuropsychologist in the world today. His 'clinical tales' are not just detached case studies of curious cases. The author describes the lives, illnesses, and differences of his patients with an unusual degree of empathy, presenting them as deeply human beings. In the book, we read about a blind sculptor who discovered her talent only at sixty, as she had paralyzed hands until then; about a hard-of-hearing woman who continuously heard Irish music and thought it was just her dental filling functioning as a crystal radio; about a man who felt he had become a dog and woke up one morning with an extraordinarily developed sense of smell and an irresistible urge to sniff everything; about another otherwise unremarkable person who memorized all six thousand pages of a musical dictionary; and about twins who could recite prime numbers up to twelve digits but struggled with simple addition and subtraction. The story of a man who confused his wife with a hat was even used as the basis for an opera by composer Michael Nyman, which was also performed in the Czech Republic.
