Description
Traumatic experiences leave consequences that often last for decades. For many years, it was believed that the best way to help with trauma is for a person to repeatedly talk about it and seek what might heal its effects. However, people who have experienced trauma describe something different. The constant repetition of the story often re-triggers traumatic experiences within them, and instead of helping them overcome it, it overwhelms them. Based on her therapeutic experiences, the author believes that it is much more helpful for people to accept trauma as a normal reaction to an abnormal situation. They need to work with the symptoms that affect their lives and stop merely surviving in the shadow of trauma.
