Description
Today, a classic book discusses the process of emotional attachment and demonstrates that a child's tendency for relational bonding is an instinctive response to the need for protection. The child seeks physical closeness to the mother or another close caregiver and expresses their need emotionally – through crying, screaming, or smiling. In response, they receive cuddling, rocking, feeding, talking, etc., through which the mother provides care and security, alleviating their anxiety from perceived threats. Thus, a so-called secure attachment is formed. Bowlby argues that a child who lacks this attachment will show signs of deprivation.
