Description
The narrative loosely follows the year-long journey of Anička and Honzík from the book A Year of Trees, who spend weekends at their grandparents' cottage in northern Bohemia. Right at the beginning of the holidays, they find an old, somewhat torn, and partially unreadable diary belonging to their grandfather's brother Ferdinand – a globetrotter who always loved traveling, puzzles, research, mysteries, and adventures. Ferdinand's notes throw them into a world of various discoveries and inventions that have advanced humanity. Because some pages in the diary are unreadable, or even completely missing, the children have to think a lot and search in books and maps. They work on deciphering the diary throughout the summer, and with the help of their grandfather, they eventually manage to solve all ten discoveries. Ferdinand began his travels precisely on September 1, 1962, and was on the road for a full ten months – the individual chapters thus mirror the entire school year.
