Description
Few people consider what the creatures that are part of our diet feel. The author, a Swedish professor of ethology, explains the emotional functioning of the most common farm animals – chickens, sheep, pigs, cows, and fish, without judging human actions or moralizing. This motivates reflections on whether today's treatment of farm animals is adequate. He writes about the differences in sensory perception between humans and animals, animal stressors, communication with animals, what evokes pleasant emotions in them, the wide range of sounds they make, their body language, their animal identity, and the dynamics within groups of animals. He also reflects on the dehumanization of our relationship with farm animals and the issue of cheap meat. The text is supplemented with references to various scientific studies and information from the Czech context.
