Description
Fast food, speed dating, power naps, brief therapy – all these modern terms suggest what the spirit of the age is like. There is even an app for speeding up reading. But does this quantitative acceleration, this constant 'self-optimization', provide a higher quality of experience? The present forces us to constantly cope with new trends and changes and adapt to them. The key concept is 'liquid modernity'; even time is perceived as a constantly flowing substance, and the worst thing that can happen to us is immobility. How to get out of this? Svend Brinkmann conceived his most famous book as an anti-manual for personal development, offering seven steps to resist the 'liquidity' of life and root oneself in existence. He recommends, for example, negative visualization (as opposed to the usual positive), taking pleasure in one's limitations (instead of boundless exploitation of possibilities), controlling and suppressing one's emotions (rather than expressing them without limits), and contemplating mortality while appreciating the gift of life (as opposed to today's common taboo on death). His solutions often draw from the thoughts of Stoic philosophers. His seven-step guide attempts to challenge some established truths about positive thinking and development.
