Description
The book by a classic of sociology and ethnology, belonging to the so-called Durkheim school, published in 1925, significantly influenced the development of social anthropology and is considered essential reading in various fields. It is the first systematic comparative work on the exchange of gifts and the first work discussing the relationships between exchange patterns and social structure. Mauss focused on the comparative examination of forms of contract and exchange in Polynesia, Melanesia, and the northwestern part of America, with partial references to the legal systems of Roman, Germanic, and classical Indian societies. The author perceives society as a set of interrelated systems, in which the gift becomes a representation of the processes occurring within society. Empirical data from various corners of the world are thus generalized into a dynamic description of society, where the gift emerges as part of the legal, economic, religious, and ethical system. The book is among his most cited works.
