A richly illustrated book for the youngest, where children learn to count to ten and name animal pairs (cat and tomcat, female dog and male dog, ewe and ram, etc.) and their young (kitten, puppy, lamb, etc.). The book also emphasizes the environments where the animals move (meadow, stable, yard, henhouse, etc.). Additionally, the book encourages children to notice details while searching for the lost chick. It includes a postscript on how to work with the text and illustrations and gradually build and deepen the story's complexity with the children.
