Description
In the 1956 book, the famous theory of cognitive dissonance (a state of mind arising from a conflict between two cognitions or attitudes) was first formulated. Scientists infiltrated a group that believed in an impending apocalypse and their salvation through UFOs. When the end of the world did not occur, the group explained it by saying that it was precisely due to their efforts that God decided to save our planet. Festinger concludes that in order for a person to believe even more strongly in a theory after their expectations have not been met, several conditions must be fulfilled – for example, they must have sacrificed a lot for their belief in the past and must have strong social support. This leads to the removal of cognitive dissonance (internal conflict), so any evidence against the held theory is explained in a way that does not harm the theory or even supports it. Besides its scientific value, the book, which can be read like a novel, tells an interesting story of a small group of people united by a bizarre yet fascinating belief.
