Description
When the author began exploring the families of people addicted to alcohol in the 1980s, she entered unknown territory, and it took several years before her book Adult Children of Alcoholics became a bestseller. Janet Woititz identified certain characteristics of these individuals. Due to the absence of parental warmth and clearly defined boundaries in childhood, for example, they are unsure of what behavior is normal, lie in situations where it is not necessary, judge themselves harshly, struggle with intimate relationships, tend either toward extreme responsibility or extreme irresponsibility, and are impulsive. The book, which aims to support these individuals in their self-esteem, can also be used for children from other types of dysfunctional families. It is not essential how old these 'children' are: these patterns persist until their bearers manage to grow out of them. Only then can they break the vicious cycle and pass on a better message to their own children than the one they received in childhood.
