Description
Ludmila Javorová (1932) is one of the few women who have been ordained as Catholic priests. Since 1964, she was the right hand of the secretly ordained Bishop Felix M. Davídek (1921–1988), a leading figure of the underground church in our country. After returning from prison (1950–1964), he prepared and ordained a number of young men as priests, both celibate and married, in the 1960s and 1970s. Ludmila Javorová was ordained as a priest of the Western rite of the Roman Catholic Church in December 1970 despite significant opposition from bishops and priests of the underground church associated with Koinótés. Ludmila Javorová could never practice her priestly vocation publicly, but she still perceives it as her life's mission, albeit still in secrecy. The book interview with her is not only a unique testimony about the life of the underground church but also a discourse on priesthood, its spirituality, the position of women in the church, and the potential contribution of femininity to the predominantly male environment of the Catholic clergy.
