Description
Freud never wrote a true textbook of psychoanalysis. Thus, his lectures come closest to this purpose. The first series was delivered between 1915 and 1917 in the lecture hall of the Vienna Psychiatric Clinic, designed to be understood even by listeners without a deeper psychiatric education. His presentation style is lively and reflects Freud's ability for didactic thinking. The structure of the lectures is based on what is immediately known to everyone from their own experiences. The topics are three classic areas of psychoanalytic investigation: faulty acts, dreams, and neurotic symptoms. The lectures provide a great overview of the knowledge from the so-called translational period of psychoanalysis. Freud continued this project in the New Series of lectures on the introduction to psychoanalysis from 1933, although this series was never presented before an audience. Here, Freud revises and supplements his findings and introduces, among other things, a structural model of the psyche. It is the most translated of Freud's works, which still belongs to the essential texts of all educational psychoanalytic institutes – an ideal introduction to the understanding of psychoanalysis, as it can only be presented by its creator himself.
