Description
A person in the position of an outsider, who has become alienated from themselves and society, cannot experience themselves or others as 'real.' They create a false self through which they confront the outside world as well as their own despair. The disintegration of their true self goes hand in hand with a growing sense of unreality of their false self, until the entire personality disintegrates in the form of an acute schizophrenic breakdown. Through case studies of schizophrenic patients, the author not only clarifies this issue but also presents a vision of mental health and illness as 'degrees of connection or disconnection between two people, where one is considered healthy based on general opinion.'
