The book, sometimes considered Fromm's most original and comprehensive work, discusses various aspects of aggression, using insights from human and animal psychology, neurophysiology, paleontology, and anthropology. Fromm distinguishes between benign and malignant aggression. Only benign aggression, which serves adaptive purposes, such as defense, is something we share with animals. On the other hand, malignant aggression—cruelty and destructiveness—is exclusively human. In humans, instincts are replaced by character, which, especially under the influence of social factors, can take on sadistic or necrophilic traits. Fromm illustrates this through the psychobiography of Hitler and other individuals. The book, published in 1973, has not lost its relevance in today's world and is particularly valued for how skillfully it refutes some competing approaches to understanding aggression and destructiveness.
