Anger is still considered something inappropriate, acceptable only in the stronger sex. Therefore, many women tend to suppress feelings of anger and function in the role of peacemaker, which can carry a number of unpleasant mental and physical symptoms caused by repressed feelings. The author addresses the definitions of terms such as anger, rage, etc., and the neurobiological causes of many different types of aggression. She reflects on typical internal beliefs related to anger, on the suppression and accumulation of anger, substitute emotions (sadness instead of anger), aggressive fantasies, bitterness, and feelings of guilt, as well as the psychosomatization of anger. The book offers many useful techniques on how to access anger and how to handle it constructively. The final chapter is aimed at men and deals with their perceptions of female anger, habitual male patterns of conflict resolution, boundary-setting in partnerships, and the prevention of domestic violence escalation.
