Description
Sibling relationships have been the subject of novels, films and fairy tales since time immemorial. They are among the longest and most intense relationships we experience in life. Although international research shows that non-disabled siblings of children with disabilities are a very large group—80% of children with disabilities have siblings—they are often overlooked by professionals and adults. High-quality support for these siblings can help prevent psychological difficulties, strengthen the effects of intervention for the child with a disability, improve the family’s quality of life and enhance care for the person with a disability in their natural environment, thereby supporting the transition from institutional to community-based care. This Czech-language book aims to help readers minimise the possible negative effects of such a relationship and draw the greatest possible benefit from it for children, families and professionals. It is intended for specialists working with families of children with disabilities, including clinical psychologists, child psychiatrists, counselling psychologists, special education teachers and social workers, as well as parents of non-disabled siblings. David Havelka studied psychology and special education and works as a psychologist in clinical psychology training at the children’s department of the psychiatric hospital in Šternberk. Kateřina Bartošová studied psychology, received her doctorate in clinical psychology in 2014 and works in private therapy and as an assistant professor at Masaryk University, where she teaches school psychology and psychotherapy.
