Superficial interpreters sometimes claim that the foundation of the Montessori approach is to give children complete freedom and not restrict them in any way. Anyone who has tried this approach with children and can objectively assess the results will conclude that mere freedom and lack of restrictions lead to selfishness in children, an inability to adapt, and later to a disregard for the rules of human coexistence. However, freedom and liberty are indeed key concepts in the educational and developmental concept of Montessori. Their application must be targeted and systematic. A decisive factor is recognizing natural activities that lead to personality development from deviant activities that lead to destruction or bullying of others. Absolute freedom applies only to natural activities. Children must be guided towards these, which is not at all simple. Freedom like, 'Go do something, I have work to do!' is probably as useful as unwarranted bullying of a child. Children usually want to work with us or according to us. Just because they are slow and less skilled, we often do not want to allow them that.
