Where does violence begin in marriage and intimate relationships? Assault, humiliation, beatings, violent behaviour and even killing are all realities that people may encounter. Are there warning signs? Nine women and three men from different backgrounds gradually share the stories of their relationships. The author analyses and comments on their experiences, drawing on her work in medicine, the legal system and psychotherapy. These are stories of love and violence, repeatedly marked by forgiveness, departures and renewed cohabitation, loneliness and psychological destruction. The women agreed to reveal the suffering they endured so that others might escape a similar fate. One of the book’s aims is to help people experiencing violence in a relationship find the courage to seek assistance. This Czech-language book is intended primarily for women at risk of intimate-partner violence, as well as social workers, therapists, mediators, lawyers and judges.
