Description
Gravity is one of the four fundamental physical forces; it is the most noticeable – even a complete layman cannot overlook that things fall to the ground – and paradoxically the weakest (the gravity of the entire Earth cannot pull a tiny magnet off the fridge). The author explains the relationship between gravity and other forces, recaps how gravity has been perceived and interpreted, and particularly focuses on Newton's law of gravitation, which sufficed for three centuries to describe gravitational effects around the Earth. However, then came Albert Einstein, who, with his general theory of relativity, described gravity more generally, taking into account phenomena that Newton could not have even imagined – the unimaginable dimensions of the universe and the bodies that exist within it, the effect of gravity on light, or on the shape of spacetime. The author also addresses the recent detection of gravitational waves, which Einstein predicted at a time when there were no tools to confirm or refute his prediction.
