This book was originally conceived as a companion work to the main work of the same author, namely the book with a practically identical title (except for the specifying clarification MAP SECTION WITH COMMENTARY), which was published in December 2008. The intention was to allow the reader to simultaneously follow the course of individual events and historical processes in their geographical dimension while reading the main work. For this purpose, the author prepared approximately 240 historical maps, arranged and numbered to precisely mirror the exposition in the main work. An accompanying intention was also to deepen the geographical and historical-geographical awareness, especially among youth, about the European space as their natural and expanding sphere of action. However, during the creation of the book, the idea arose to enable readers who do not have access to the main work to gain a sufficiently comprehensive introduction to the subject matter. Therefore, for each map, a more or less detailed commentary was prepared, which elucidates the displayed realities. The book can thus serve – with an appropriate level of detail – as a standalone source, although its effectiveness will be enhanced when used alongside the main work.
