Description
This historical novel is set after the death of King Vratislaus II in 1092, when one of the most dramatic periods in the history of the medieval Czech state begins. As members of the expanding Přemyslid clan struggle for power, the widowed Queen Svatava intervenes as an influential power behind the scenes. Against the background of the chaotic succession of Přemyslid princes on the stone throne, another conflict unfolds between the advancing Christian faith and fading paganism. The invisible threads of these two bitter disputes eventually converge at Ostrov Benedictine Monastery, surrounded by the Vltava River. There, the learned monk Eberhard from the renowned Reichenau monastery arrives to carry out an order to eliminate the representatives of the old faith. Those who do not leave the country voluntarily face death by burning or drowning. His encounter with the last and most powerful priestess affects not only his own fate, but that of the entire principality.
