Young playwright Melina Green has just written a new play inspired by the life of her Elizabethan ancestor, Emilia Bassano. But the prospect of seeing it staged is unlikely in a theatrical world where women do not start on equal footing with men. Melina’s friend therefore decides to submit the play to a festival under a male pseudonym. In 1581, Emilia Bassano is under the protection of English nobles. Although she is witty and has a gift for storytelling, like most women of her time she has no voice of her own. When she is forced to become the mistress of a powerful lord, Emilia discovers through him for the first time what a playwright’s words can achieve. She decides to bring her play secretly to the stage by paying an actor named William Shakespeare to present it under his own name. Moving between two interwoven time periods and drawing on authentic historical sources, the author develops a compelling story of ambition, courage and determination: the story of two women separated by centuries but united by their refusal to submit to prejudice and power and by their desire to create freely.
