Description
This Czech-language historical novel explores the little-known fate of Guillaume, the only historically documented illegitimate son of Charles IV, King of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor. Charles probably met Guillaume’s mother in 1365 during one of his journeys to Avignon, undertaken in repeated efforts to return the papal seat to Rome. He also stayed in nearby Arles during his coronation as King of Arles. At the height of his power, Charles had achieved much as a ruler, including a politically advantageous marriage to Elizabeth of Pomerania, which successfully suppressed growing opposition. Yet, almost fifty years old, he realized that his life lacked a deep emotional bond. Just as he had nearly abandoned his dream of personal happiness, he met the beautiful and noble Margareta of Arles. After idyllic days with her in Arles and Avignon, he returned to Prague and learned that Margareta had given birth to his son Guillaume.
