Description
A vivid portrait of the woman who inspired the tragic heroine of Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter. Young seamstress Isobel Gamble lives with her husband, pharmacist Edward, in Glasgow. However, Edward falls under the spell of opium and sinks into debt, forcing them both to leave Scotland and start anew in the New World. But just days after arriving in Salem, Edward joins a departing ship as a medic, leaving his wife alone and without money. When Isobel meets young Nathaniel Hawthorne, they are immediately drawn to each other. He is haunted by the shadow of ancestors who sent innocent women to the gallows, while she is troubled by her extraordinary talent, which hides a family secret.
