Description
In 1579, an Italian priest and Jesuit missionary, Father Valignano, arrives in Japan on a Portuguese trading ship, bringing with him a great and imposing African as his protector. A young but experienced soldier, who was kidnapped from his native village as a boy and forced to fight with mercenaries in India, is still haunted by memories of a troubled past. Father Valignano leads the expedition to Kyoto, to the powerful warlord Nobunaga, who is trying to unify a nation torn apart by civil war. In exchange for permission to build a church, Valignano 'gifts' the warlord his protector, and the young man feels more like an object than a person once again. However, when he pledges loyalty to Nobunaga, the men from completely different worlds build mutual trust and respect. The African becomes the first foreigner to earn the title of samurai and receives a new name: Yasuke. It is rumored that he will soon have his own servants and soldiers to command. The fulfillment of all his dreams, however, depends on whether he can protect his new master from numerous enemies and threats.
