Description
It is the nineteenth century, and Englishwoman Nora is the only medical student at the prestigious University of Bologna. At that time, women are expected to stay at home and raise children, so her ambition to pursue surgery is seen as scandalous by the men around her. Nora is under constant scrutiny; her successes are taken for granted, while mistakes are seen as proof that women do not belong among doctors. However, she does not give up and, together with the esteemed physician Magdalena Marenco, she strives to perfect a groundbreaking and previously rarely performed operation – the cesarean section. Upon returning to England, Nora tries to apply the results of her research in her native London, where she encounters a patient for whom the cesarean section is the only hope for survival. First, however, she must overcome the skepticism of the local doctors and the patient's husband, who have no trust in either the procedure itself or Nora's surgical skills.
