Description
This Czech-language novel follows Jitka, an ordinarily pretty but sensitive and perceptive girl in her early twenties who believes the communists in socialist Czechoslovakia barely more than she believes that the Earth is round. After the police catch her at an illegal concert in Prague, an apparently insignificant incident closes the path to further study. She decides to try her luck in the West and succeeds in emigrating. Only then does she discover such things as asylum, work permits and refugee camps. She spends almost a year in the famous Traiskirchen, encountering a gallery of characters, mostly Czech and Slovak, whose existence she could never have imagined back home in Bohemia. For a long time, Jitka is merely a horrified observer of everything around her. But when she becomes one of the victims of an act of violence that is never investigated, it surprisingly does not break her. She finds within herself a firm centre and the strength to overcome life’s obstacles.
