After the sudden death of her master, Major Thorkildsen, his loyal dog friend Tassen is left alone with Mrs. Thorkildsen. Each of them copes with the tragedy in their own way: Tassen overeats treats, while Mrs. T. succumbs to drinking. However, their shared days begin to brighten as they spend time in the family library, reading together about Roald Amundsen's adventurous expedition to the South Pole and his fearless pack of dogs... Unfortunately, their peace is unexpectedly disrupted by the arrival of Mrs. T.'s son and daughter-in-law.
