At the very beginning of World War II, hundreds of children were sent from London to the countryside to be spared from the horrors of bombings. Safety, however, came at the cost of being torn away from loved ones and everything familiar. Such a fate befell seven-year-old Pearl. She meets Vivienne, a woman disillusioned by life who never asked for a child. Once she had a husband and a sister, but she intends to leave that in the past. But who, if not little Pearl, should force her to confront her own mistakes and the consequences of not just her actions? After all, no one is an island unto themselves...
