Description
People suffering from social anxiety feel nervousness and tension in the presence of others. Such a person fears judgment that may relate to their appearance, behavior, or character, and has exaggerated concerns about what others might think of them. This disorder significantly worsens the quality of life, especially for young people, hindering their studies, work, interactions with peers, and the establishment of romantic relationships. The affected individual is often handicapped from childhood or adolescence. The monograph addresses the diagnosis, etiopathogenesis, and treatment of this serious mental disorder, describing comorbidity, differential diagnosis, and social aspects including stigmatization and self-stigmatization. Cognitive-behavioral therapy or antidepressant treatment is proposed as a solution. The treatment section characterizes the most important pharmacological and psychotherapeutic approaches, including current algorithms. The publication is intended for clinical practitioners, especially psychiatrists and clinical psychologists, as well as counselors who work with patients suffering from social anxiety in a diagnostic and therapeutic capacity. It will also be appreciated by students in these fields and anyone close to someone with this disorder.
